O4 – Modeling at School Framework

Based on an analysis of primary and secondary school curricula (IO1), we develop a generic curriculum, the MAS Framework, our integrative approach that allows teaching modeling and computational thinking as well as digital literacy as transversal themes in primary and secondary schools and can be implemented in all national curricula. Besides general information about modeling for different purposes, the MAS Framework suggests ways, ideas and hints how modeling can be fitted into the national curricula of all subjects and school levels. Depending on the educational context, as teachers might have few time and freedom of choice concerning topics and learning contents or might be hesitant to integrate something new, maybe difficult and no subject specific in their lessons, our proposed integrative MAS Framework will provide examples on how to link issues of modeling to subject specific contents, topics, competencies, activities, etc.

The MAS Framework aims at showing best practices on how subject specific contents can be taught and linked together by using modeling as teaching and learning tool. The aim of the MAS Framework is to support the integration of computational thinking as transversal theme in primary and secondary education by using modeling as tool for teaching and enhancing the competencies behind, which are needed more or less in all subjects and are part of 21st century skills: problem solving, structured and algorithmic thinking, abstraction, generalization, text comprehension, creativity, etc.
